The Kampilan (Trainer) – A Royal Blade of the Philippines

The Kampilan – A Royal Blade of the Philippines

At Warisan International Martial Arts Academy, we are proud to announce that the legendary Kampilan is now available for purchase. This iconic weapon carries not only sharp steel in its history but also centuries of heritage, symbolism, and warrior spirit.

The History of the Kampilan

The Kampilan is one of the most recognizable traditional swords of the Philippines. With its long, single-edged blade and distinct widening tip, it was designed for devastating slashes in battle. This weapon became especially known among the Moro warriors of Mindanao and Sulu, where it was regarded as a blade of status and prestige.

The Kampilan is often described as a royal weapon. Many accounts connect it to chieftains, datus, and even kings, who carried it not only as a tool of war but also as a symbol of power and leadership. In fact, Philippine history remembers the Kampilan as the sword said to have struck down the explorer Ferdinand Magellan in the Battle of Mactan (1521), led by the warrior-hero Lapu-Lapu.

The Form and Size

Unlike shorter Filipino swords such as the bolo or barong, the Kampilan is a two-handed weapon, designed for maximum reach and cutting power. Our handcrafted Kampilan measures 102 cm (40 inches) in total length, giving it authentic proportions true to the traditional blade.

The handle is often decorated with traditional carvings and sometimes adorned with hair tassels or animal motifs, marking its role not only as a weapon of war but also as a ceremonial and royal blade.

Purpose and Use

The Kampilan was primarily used in open-field battles, where its reach and striking force were unmatched. Warriors wielded it with both hands, delivering strikes that could cut through shields and armor. Beyond the battlefield, the Kampilan stood as a symbol of authority, honor, and heritage, carried by leaders and protectors of the community.

Handmade in Birch Plywood – 13 Layers of Strength

Our Kampilan is carefully crafted from 13 layers of high-quality birch plywood, with a thickness of 18 millimeters. This layered construction makes it extremely durable, resilient, and safe for training purposes, while still honoring the traditional form and spirit of the weapon. Each blade is built to withstand the rigors of martial arts practice, demonstrations, and display, while carrying the unique character of its layered wood design.

Own a Piece of History

By offering the Kampilan for sale, we aim to give martial artists, collectors, and cultural enthusiasts the chance to hold a weapon that is more than just wood, it is a living piece of Filipino history. Each Kampilan represents courage, leadership, and the warrior spirit that has been passed down for generations.
